An Idea, A Trip and a Blog

It all began with an idea: let’s join a cycling trip in Sri Lanka. Why Sri Lanka? First, we heard from friends we had met on other cycling trips that the Exodus Travel trip through Sri Lanka is one of the best they offer and, second, our son-in-law was born in Sri Lanka. Lahiru has always wanted to take our daughter, Danica, to Sri Lanka, to show her his country of birth and where he grew up as a child before moving to Canada at age 11. They finally made plans to go and, never ones to miss a travel opportunity, we jumped on board. No, we didn’t hijack their trip - they’re still travelling on their own while we join the cycling trip. We will meet up in mid-February to travel together for about 10 days.

Now, a trip to Sri Lanka is no small undertaking in its own right. It would have been enough to start and stop there, but no, our plans grew as we began scoping things out: Our travels with Dani and Lahiru would end at the beginning of March. We all know that Ontario is less than the ideal winter wonderland through most of March. So, I reasoned, why would we come back then? We’re retired, we have no schedule, what’s the rush? And then there’s my next “big” birthday in the middle of April. I mean, we might as well plan a great adventure for that event, right? And that’s how our trip has expanded to this three month adventure through Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia.

I decided to start this blog to serve both as a journal for me, as well as a way for those of you who are interested, to follow Gary and me on our travels. I plan/will definitely try hard to make regular posts about where we are and what we’re up to, accompanied by galleries of photos. You can contact me through this website. You can also subscribe to this blog to receive a notification of when I post something new. If you don’t want to make that kind of commitment, however, I totally understand and you can still see some photos on my Instagram or check back here from time to time.

Thanks for visiting and thanks for reading. Let’s go have some adventures! First stop, Sri Lanka. The accompanying map shows exactly where we’ll be cycling. There may be some slight deviations due to the recent flooding there, I guess we’ll find out more once we meet up with our guide and the rest of the tour group in Sigiriya, our starting point.
